CONNECTED LEARNING CENTRE TRIPLES NUMBER OF COURSES AVAILABLE IN COROWA I just had a walk through the multi-million dollar TAFE NSW Connected Learning Centre (CLC), which is nearing completion. This facility will more than triple the number of courses available to local students compared to the existing TAFE campus. Enrolments are open now. I’m particularly excited because this is the first time courses such as the Statement of Attainment in Drone Essentials, Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care, Certificate IV in Commercial Cookery and Diploma in Business Administration will be available to students in Corowa. Virtual reality and classrooms unlike anything you've seen before. Importantly, these expanded course offerings – with the promise of more to come in the future– reduce the need for students to travel, so our young people can stay here in the local community. NSW GUN AMNESTY NOW UNDERWAY Last year, nearly 25,000 firearms were netted by NSW Police during the national gun amnesty. You have another chance to surrender unwanted or prohibited weapons or to become a responsible firearm owner and register a gun or rifle. The NSW firearm amnesty has now commenced. Consider whether it’s time to register or to hand over a gun or rifle to local Police. The three month gun amnesty runs from 1 July to 30 September 2018. Anyone with concerns about handling firearms or safely transporting them, can contact the NSW Police Force Firearms Registry on 1300 362 562 for assistance. 2018 NSW Carers Awards Carers are everyday people in our community. They are family members, friends, neighbours and work colleagues. We rely on them – and we appreciate all they do. There are close to one million carers across NSW who provide ongoing unpaid support to people who need it because of their disability, chronic illness, mental illness or frail age. I encourage anyone who knows of an exceptional local carer or organisation supporting carers to nominate them for this year’s NSW Carers Awards. To nominate, please go to http://www.careforacarer.nsw.gov.au

CARDIAC CATHETER LAB OPENS The Cardiac Catheter Lab at Albury Hospital was opened this morning. The Federal Government funded the Lab and now the states take over, to staff and manage this sensational new – and much desired – facility. Our appreciation must go to Leigh McJames and the team at Albury Wodonga Health, Board Chair Nicki Melville, Lou Lieberman, recently retired and previous Chair of AWH, and the many donors including the Rotary Club of Albury Foundation and Rotary and Lions Clubs from both sides of the border, represented here today. Job well done! I also commend the spirit of collaboration between Albury Wodonga Health and St Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne. I am thankful that more and more amazing life-saving procedures are becoming available here, right where we live and where we want to be: at home. Albury Wodonga Health NSW Health

RETIREMENT VILLAGE REFORMS The NSW Government has announced a package of reforms on critical issues affecting retirement villages. These are based on recommendations of the Greiner Report: • implementing a mandatory Code of Conduct to set the standard for retirement village operators and to stamp out unscrupulous behaviour; • introducing strong transparency measures to improve disclosure of key contract terms, exit fees, and to drive greater competition in the sector; • improved dispute resolution services for residents; and • measures to help clarify responsibilities with respect to ongoing maintenance costs. The NSW Government will also appoint a dedicated Retirement Village Ambassador to advocate on behalf of residents, and report back on key issues. In addition, the Government will consult with the sector on the potential for further reforms to improve the professionalism of operators and increase certainty of costs. #retirementvillagelife

Today's cover pic is from my recent meeting with Friends of Nolan House. On Budget Day I was excited to deliver news that the NSW Government will take down Nolan House and build a new acute mental health facility for the border region. No more band-aid solutions to an out-of-date design. Newly designed facilities will enable new programs, within a more welcoming place, to promote health and healing. I have really appreciated the help I received from the Friends of Nolan House, and staff, to understand the situation and give me the information I needed to take to Parliament and make a convincing case. A Great Day!

2018-19 NSW BUDGET: MENTAL HEALTH I have been working on a plan to completely modernise the way mental health is managed here. First came the Brain & Mind Centre, currently under development, as a community treatment one-stop-shop. And today the exciting news that Nolan House – the border’s acute mental health facility – will be reimagined and rebuilt with planning funding to commence the process. It’s not just infrastructure. An increase of $82.5M in the mental health Budget boosts it to $2 billion – the biggest single investment in mental health infrastructure in Australia’s history. With local children raising awareness of a little Thurgoona local, the threatened Sloane’s froglet. If we want to get the public to help us in efforts to save this species then the Sloane’s froglet needs a public profile and this project will help achieve that locally. Community awareness is key in efforts to save many species and activities like the street art project will help focus the local community’s attention on the threats facing species like Sloane’s froglet. A series of artworks of the Sloane’s froglet and its wetland habitat has been installed on public pavements around Thurgoona. Local artist Linda Fish worked with Year 6 students from Thurgoona Primary School and members of the Thurgoona Community Centre in a series of workshops to create striking froglet stencils. As you know, mental health has been a real priority for me in the Albury Electorate. The Mental Health Commission of NSW has a new online survey to understand what is important to you in community-based mental health services and supports. Your survey response will help the Commission to develop a set of evidence-based principles for planning, developing and monitoring community services and supports in NSW that work for people living with mental health issues and their families and carers. They want to know what is working well and what is not working and what your vision of community support is. Please consider filling in the 10-minute online survey. It will be open until 29 June 2018. Go to: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/communitybasedservices

Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW John Barilaro was in Albury on Tuesday and we went to the home of the Flying Fruit Fly Circus to announce a grant of more than $43,000 under the NSW Government’s Regional Cultural Fund. Mr Barilaro said the funding will allow the Flying Fruit Fly Circus, one of Australia’s pre-eminent youth circus training and performance centres, to expand their facilities and introduce new major circus apparatus. GOOD NEWS FOR CARAVANNERS As part of this year’s Budget initiatives, the NSW Government is reducing by 40 per cent the motor vehicle tax for caravans and camper trailers. The change will apply to towed caravans and purpose-built camper trailers weighing up to 4.5 tonnes, putting a saving of up to $471 back into the pockets of hard working families across the state. The reduction will benefit about 120,000 registrations and will be implemented from 1 November 2018. Tell your friends and fellow travellers! Melinda Pavey The NRMA

$150,000 FOR ALBURY PCYC At Albury PCYC on Friday to announce that the NSW Government has allocated $150,000 to upgrade the PCYC facility. Once the works are complete, the facility will have enhanced multi-purpose activity spaces enabling a variety of sports to be played and increasing participation by the wider community. The current amenities at the club will also be upgraded so they are modern and inviting. Our PCYC does exceptional work engaging our young people in many sports and activities, guiding them to make positive life decisions and helping many to avoid entering into the juvenile justice system. At the Ettamogah Rail Hub this morning to announce a grant of $7.6 million to increase siding capacity by more than five kilometres. The money comes as part of the NSW Government Fixing Country Rail Program. With me are Cameron Jackson and Colin Rees, discussing how the project will substantially increase freight capacity at the terminal, enabling longer trains of up to 1,200 metres in length to be loaded off the main line. The use of longer trains will cut delivery times and allow more goods to be transported by rail, reducing costs for both producers and consumers. A great win for business in Albury!
